Shedeur Sanders not expected to be immediately impacted if Browns take Ty Simpson originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

There have still been questions about what the Cleveland Browns might do at the quarterback position during the 2026 NFL Draft. Some seem to believe that Shedeur Sanders will be the guy of the future in Cleveland, while others believe it could go a different direction and take a quarterback in the first round.

If the Browns end up going the quarterback route, whether in the first round or later in the draft, Ty Simpson out of Alabama and Penn State’s Drew Allar seem to be the two guys.

Selecting one of them would certainly impact Sanders, but according to the latest from Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com, it doesn't sound like if they were to draft Simpson, he'd be a guaranteed starter.

“I don’t think Simpson would have to climb to the top of the heap right away. It’s OK to let a quarterback wait a bit,” Cabot wrote. “Green Bay’s Jordan Love and others have had to wait their turn. If they draft Simpson at No. 24 or No. 39, it means they believe he has plenty of upside and might have a chance to supersede Sanders.

“But it doesn’t mean they’d have to give up on Sanders or part with him right away. I think the Browns truly feel that Sanders has an excellent chance to elevate his game and become a quality NFL starter. It wouldn’t be out of the question to see how Sanders plays, and go from there, with Simpson waiting in the wings.”

If that's really the case, I don't think the Browns have any reason to go after a quarterback. The only reason they should take a quarterback in the first or second round is if they believe they have a real opportunity to be a starter in Week 1.

There's no reason to continue playing these games, as it really doesn't help anybody in the short or long term.
