This week's Blue Federal Credit Union Girls Athlete of the Week award is thriving in one of track's toughest events.

Fort Collins High School track and field's June Fuchs took top honors in the Fort Collins area for the week of April 13-18 after a big meet down in Johnstown.

Fuchs beat out a tough field in the 800 meters, winning the event at Roosevelt's Randall Hess Roughrider Invitational on April 18.

The senior didn't just win. She also set a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 14 seconds en route to her second win in the 800 this season.

Fuchs' time of 2:14 was also good for eighth this season in all of Colorado and sixth in Class 5A, according to MileSplit.

The Lambkins runner wasn't done at the meet, either.

Fuchs also anchored Fort Collins' winning relay squads in the 4x400 and 4x800 at the Randall Hess and ultimately helping the FCHS girls finish third in the team standings.

A three-time state qualifier in cross-country, Fuchs has become a top mid-distance runner in the state on the track this season and will continue her running career in college at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Fuchs is the fourth Fort Collins High School athlete to earn Blue FCU Athlete of the Week honors this school year, joining girls basketball players Lydia Childs and Annika VanDalen and girls tennis player Scarlett Marske.

The Lambkin senior got 24.6% of the vote to narrowly finish ahead of these four other worthy girls Athlete of the Week nominees:

• Addyson Smith, Fossil Ridge track and field (runner-up with 23.2% of the vote)

• Tatum Gentry, Windsor soccer/track & field

• Peyton Landon, Timnath golf

• Miriam Huffsmith, Liberty Common soccer

The Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week series features five nominees on Mondays, with voting at Coloradoan.com until 11:59 a.m. every Thursday.

Fans can nominate their favorite athletes (deadline: 11:59 p.m. every Sunday), and the Coloradoan Sports staff will ultimately select the nominees each week.

If you have nominations for a future Athlete of the Week, please send them via email to ChrisAbshire@coloradoan.com for consideration.
