Hainan, China’s southern tropical island province, has teamed up with Trip.com to launch a flight voucher programme worth RMB 5 million (approximately $730,000) to attract international tourists. The initiative, which began on 22 April and runs until 30 August, aims to reduce air travel costs for inbound visitors by offering substantial discounts.
The “Discount Flights to Hainan, Enjoyable Vacations” campaign provides two tiers of vouchers. Tourists from seven Southeast Asian countries, as well as Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, can receive an RMB 400 (about $58) discount on flight purchases of RMB 1,600 or more. Meanwhile, tourists from other countries are eligible for an RMB 600 (about $87) discount on bookings of at least RMB 3,000.
Travellers can access these discounts through the Trip.com app by booking return tickets to Haikou and Sanya, Hainan’s major cities. The discount applies only if the fare for each passenger meets the minimum spending threshold and can be combined with standard Trip.com promotions.
In addition to airfare discounts, Hainan has introduced six premium tour routes and ten ocean-themed routes, offering a variety of tourism products such as family tours, coastal holidays, and cultural experiences. An exclusive benefit package for inbound tourists, available on the NihaoChina app, UnionPay app, and Kuyou Hainan WeChat mini-programme, provides further incentives.
Hainan’s visa-free entry policy for citizens from 86 countries has significantly boosted inbound tourism, with over 495,000 tourists visiting in the first quarter of this year—a 54% increase year-on-year
