Burlington, Vt.-based University of Vermont Health eliminated nine positions April 14 at Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, N.Y., and Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, N.Y., according to a statement shared with Becker’s.
The layoffs affected two employees at Alice Hyde and seven at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital.
“Our commitment to care for the communities we serve requires us to continually evaluate, with purpose, the work we do and how we do it so that we can preserve access to care today and for generations to come,” Michelle LeBeau, president of the hospitals, said in the statement. “As a result, we sometimes must make difficult decisions to deliver on that promise.”
Ms. LeBeau said the decision comes as the health system navigates rising costs and broader policy changes while working to maintain access to care in rural communities.
University of Vermont Health is a rural academic health system serving Vermont and northern New York, with more than 14,000 employees.
