A major exhibition showcasing the opulence of the Edwardian era opens tomorrow at The King’s Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Among the 150 works from the Royal Collection, Queen Alexandra’s trailblazing Coronation gown and a never-before-exhibited royal portrait of Queen Mary are set to captivate visitors. This exhibition marks the first time more than half of these items are displayed in Scotland.
The exhibition, titled “The Edwardians: Age of Elegance,” delves into the lives of King Edward VII, Queen Alexandra, King George V, and Queen Mary. It highlights their influence during a period of significant change and luxury. Queen Alexandra’s Coronation ensemble, designed by the Parisian fashion house Morin Blossier, features a mauve velvet mantle and a gown adorned with gold spangles. The gown, designed for the first Coronation at Westminster Abbey to benefit from electric light, is displayed alongside her jewellery and King Edward’s Coronation mantle.
Curator Kathryn Jones noted, “Alexandra’s choice of a shimmering gold fabric would have been incredibly novel… the new queen appeared in an extraordinary blaze of golden light thanks to the new electric lighting.”
The exhibition also explores the private lives and artistic interests of the royal couples, featuring works by renowned artists such as Frederic Lord Leighton and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Visitors can enjoy a multimedia guide narrated by Hugh Bonneville, immersing them in the Edwardian era from the royal wedding in 1863 to the end of World War I in 1918.
“The Edwardians: Age of Elegance” runs from 24 April to 6 December 2026, offering a glimpse into a transformative period in British history
