The New England Patriots will milk the most out of their deal with former second-team All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via MassLive’s Mark Daniels), the Patriots exercised their fifth-year club option on Gonzalez’s contract on Tuesday.
Gonzalez signed a four-year, $15.1 million deal with the Patriots in 2023. It included an $18.1 million club option for the 2027 season. Gonzalez will be in line to become an unrestricted free agent following the conclusion of that season.
This decision from the Patriots comes as the franchise works through talks of an extension with Gonzalez. The Patriots have long been in negotiations with the Oregon product regarding an extension as his status as one of the top cover corners in the league has risen.
Gonzalez was pivotal toward the Patriots’ run to the Super Bowl in the 2025 NFL season. He recorded 10 passes defended and a tackle for loss in 14 games played for New England last season.
