Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Health System recorded an operating income of $641.9 million (7.5% operating margin) in 2025, up from an operating income of $179.8 million (2.7% margin) in 2024, according to its April 28 financial report.

SIx things to know:

1. WVU Medicine reported total operating revenue of $8.6 billion during the 12 months ended Dec. 31, a 26.5% increase year over year. Net patient service revenue increased 26.3% to $7.4 billion. Outpatient pharmacy revenue increased 26% to $847.2 million. Other revenue increased 34.2% to $327.6 million.

2. Total operating expenses were $7.9 billion, a 20.2% increase year over year. Salaries, wages and employee benefits increased 17.1% to $3.6 billion. Supply costs increased 17.5% to $1.8 billion. Professional fees and purchased services expenses increased 20.2% to $423.5 million.

3. Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center, a 238-bed acute care hospital, officially joined the health system on Jan. 1, 2025. WVU Medicine currently operates 25 hospitals in West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

4. WVU Medicine has several hospital acquisitions pending. The system announced plans in November to acquire Greensburg, Pa.-based Independence Health System in a deal expected to close in fall 2027. In February, the system announced plans to acquire Orchard Park Hospital, a 30-bed inpatient pediatric psychiatric hospital in Wheeling, W.Va. That deal is expected to close by the end of 2026. In April, Fulton County Medical Center, a 21-bed critical access hospital in McConnellsburg, Pa., signed a nonbinding letter of intent to join the system. That deal is expected to close on or before Jan. 1, 2027.

5. As of Dec. 31, WVU Medicine had 155 days cash on hand, up from 138 on the same date in 2024.

6. The system reported a net income of $940.4 million in 2025, up from $344.3 million in 2024.
