The Boston Red Sox can't catch a break. After starting the 2026 season 9-17 and firing manager Alex Cora, they have lost their best player in Cy Young runner-up Garrett Crochet to an injury.
MassLive insider Christopher Smith broke the news on X.
The official designation is shoulder inflammation in his throwing arm. Perhaps what has been the root cause of his uncharacteristic early-season struggles.
Crochet has made five starts this season, allowing 33 hits in only 30 innings pitched. He allowed 23 runs in the first four games of April, including an 11-run shellacking from the bats of the Minnesota Twins.
The massive left-hander is coming off his best start of the season in Cora's final game when he pitched six scoreless frames, allowing only three hits and striking out seven in the Red Sox's blowout win over the Baltimore Orioles.
In the meantime, MassLive reports that Nate Eaton has been called up to take his place in Toronto while they continue to plot out his replacement in the rotation.
"(The Red Sox) called up speedster Nate Eaton to take his spot," Chris Cotillo wrote. "The Red Sox have not announced the order of their starting rotation for their weekend series against the Astros, but Triple-A lefty Jake Bennett, who was scratched from Worcester’s rotation, seems likely to make his major league debut."
