In a rare moment for one of college wrestling's premier programs, a wrestler has entered the transfer portal. According to FloWrestling, fifth year heavyweight wrestler Lucas Cochran has entered the transfer portal. For Cochran, what may have caused the transfer may have been his inability to truly carve out a role on the five time NCAA champions.

Interestingly enough for Cochran, he may not even be eligible to wrestle again in his collegiate career should he sign with someone else. After redshirting for the first two years of his career, he may need to find a way to apply for a medical redshirt to wrestle for a sixth season. For Cochran, it's not as if he never truly rose to the occasion for the Nittany Lions. On the contrary, when called upon to wrestle, Cochran usually filled his role well.

He ended up finishing his Penn State career with a 36-8 record, with perhaps his most extraordinary win coming in 2024. In a dual meet at the Bryce Jordan Center, Cochran was called upon to replace Penn State's normal heavyweight in Greg Kerkvliet and found himself up against the No. 8 wrestler in the country in Rutgers' Yaraslau Slavikouski. He ended up beating him 8-3 for his most famous result.

Still, Cochran could not find a way to make a permanent role stick. He had the chance to be named Penn State's official heavyweight wrestler in 2024-25, but lost out to Cole Mirasola. Hopefully, wherever he ends up, not only will he have success, but have the ability to make a name for himself should he get the proper eligibility.
