Saudi Arabia’s almatar Travel Solutions has entered into a strategic partnership with Wakanow, one of Africa’s leading digital travel platforms, in a move aimed at strengthening air connectivity and expanding access to travel services across the continent. Under the agreement, almatar will enable Wakanow to offer enhanced flight booking services to customers in more than 15 African countries, leveraging its expertise in travel technology and airline content distribution. The collaboration is expected to streamline access to flight inventory while improving the overall digital booking experience for users across key African markets.

The partnership comes at a time when Africa’s travel sector is witnessing rapid digital transformation, with rising demand for seamless, tech-driven booking solutions. By integrating almatar’s technology into Wakanow’s platform, the two companies aim to unlock new opportunities in a market that is increasingly driven by mobile-first consumers and cross-border travel needs. Founded in Nigeria in 2008, Wakanow operates more than 34 travel service centres alongside its digital platform, serving millions of users across the continent. The partnership will allow the platform to expand its flight offerings while strengthening its position as a key travel gateway in Africa.

Backed by Saudi Arabia’s tech ambitions

The agreement was signed under the patronage of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), reflecting Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to support the global expansion of its technology sector. Talking about the partnership, Mohammed Alrobayan, Deputy Minister for Technology at MCIT, said: “This partnership reflects the level of maturity and competitiveness achieved by Saudi technology companies, as well as their ability to develop scalable digital solutions for global markets.” The collaboration aligns with the Kingdom’s efforts to position its technology firms as global players, particularly in high-growth sectors such as travel and digital services.

Driving cross-border collaboration under Vision 2030

Beyond improving connectivity, the partnership highlights a growing trend of cross-regional collaboration between the Middle East and Africa, particularly in the digital economy. It also supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives of diversifying the economy, boosting non-oil exports, and strengthening the global footprint of Saudi companies. By enabling African platforms to access advanced travel technology solutions, the deal underscores how Saudi firms are increasingly exporting not just services, but digital infrastructure and innovation to international markets.
