Tennessee men's swimmer Martin Espernberger was named as the male recipient of the 2025-26 Southeastern Conference H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
He was selected by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from SEC universities and will receive a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship.
Espernberger is the first Tennessee male swimmer and the third swimming and diving athlete to win the award, joining Lauryn McCalley (2005) and Christine Magnuson (2009). He is also the eighth Tennessee student-athlete to be recognized for the award. Football player Parker Henry was Tennessee's last winner of the award in 2018.
"Being selected for the McWhorter Award means a great deal to me," Espernberger said. "It represents the balance of discipline across academics and athletics, and it motivates me to continue pursuing graduate work in power systems and power electronics with the goal of contributing to practical energy solutions."
Espernberger will graduate with a degree in electrical engineering in May with a 3.86 GPA.
