The New York Mets are having a disastrous 2026 season so far. A 12-game losing streak and the worst record in Major League Baseball have led to some uncomfortable questions.

While Carlos Mendoza isn't going anywhere, the same cannot be said for the players. If things keep going south, the trade deadline might be an interesting time for the Mets.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com shared that one MLB executive is predicting that the Mets will make a disappointing decision with Freddy Peralta and trade him away only a few months after acquiring him over the offseason.

Mets predicted to trade Freddy Peralta amid disaster season

"As part of our annual first-month executives poll, we asked 20 front-office members whom they believed would be the biggest name moved by the Aug. 3 Trade Deadline," Feinsand writes. "... Freddy Peralta, Mets (1 vote)."

The Mets parting with Peralta at the trade deadline, in a vacuum, would make sense. Trading away a player on an expiring contract at the deadline for long-term assets is the best thing a seller can do at the deadline.

With the Mets potentially being sellers, trading Peralta, who will be a free agent, would make a ton of sense. But this situation is a bit different.

Peralta was just acquired over the offseason, and the Mets aren't a typical seller as a team with one of the biggest payrolls in the sport. Peralta is someone the Mets want to extend as well, so a trade wouldn't be a good way to keep him around long-term.

What makes this trade even more unlikely is that recently, ESPN's Jorge Castillo reported that there are three pitchers the Mets tagged as untouchables, with Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, and Peralta the trio the Mets don't want to trade.

It's too soon to write off any move for the Mets this season, given how terrible the year has gone. And if things get even worse, a fire sale might actually not be the worst idea.

Peralta has a 3.52 ERA this season and would surely draw plenty of interest. And while there's a non-zero chance he's dealt, the signs are pointing to the Mets keeping him despite what this MLB executive is predicting.
