The Boston Celtics lost Game 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night, and fans were quick to call for Joe Mazzulla to be fired.
Fans were not pleased with how Mazzulla went about the starting lineup with Jayson Tatum out, and how he handled the rotations throughout the game. Not all the blame falls on him, but after holding a 3-1 lead, fans expected Mazzulla and the players to find a way to win just one more game.
Now that the season is over, fans want a change in leadership.
"If Mazzulla isn’t fired by midnight, we riot," 98.5 The Sports Hub's Matt McCarthy wrote on X after the game.
"Fire Joe Mazzulla as soon as the buzzer sounds," another fan wrote on X.
"Fire Joe Mazzulla, terrible rotations and so much shooting 3s," another fan wrote on X. "(No one attacking) the paint no more."
"Joe Mazzulla should be fired," one fan suggested after the game. "Out-coached by Nick Nurse. What an embarrassment."
Countless fans took to social media to call for a new head coach. This was Mazzulla's fourth season as the Celtics head coach. He has led them to one NBA Title. Last season, the Celtics were eliminated in the second round, and in his first season, they lost in the Conference Finals.
The Celtics were the No. 2 seed this season, despite playing without Jayson Tatum for most of the year. However, they failed to close out a series with a 3-1 lead against a 76ers team that did not have Embiid until Game 4. Mazzulla's future will be something to monitor in the coming weeks. Someone will have to bear the blame for choking away a 3-1 lead.
