Despite all exit reports, Fabrizio Romano reveals why Joshua Zirkzee might still have a future at Manchester United.
Following his exploits at Bologna, the Dutchman joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2024 on a deal worth £36.5 million.

However, the 24-year-old has been enduring challenging times, and has been somewhat lost in the shuffle amidst all the managerial changes.
Joshua Zirkzee still willing to extend his time at Man Utd
Zirkzee originally arrived at the orders of his compatriot Erik ten Hag, but the latter was sacked a few months later. Ruben Amorim wasn’t always convinced by the former Bayern Munich striker, but he still relied on him last season, preferring him over Rasmus Hojlund on several occasions.

This term, Zirkzee has been relegated to the bench following the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo, and is currently starved of playing time. Michael Carrick’s appointment only reduced his minutes, with four attackers (the three new signings plus Amad Diallo) vying for three starting roles.
Therefore, most sources in England and Italy are expecting Zirkzee to leave Man Utd in the summer, as a host of top Serie A clubs have registered their interest in the benchwarmer.
But during his appearance on the Here We Go podcast, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano insisted that the attacker’s departure is not a foregone conclusion just yet.
The transfer market insider explained that Zirkzee ‘loves’ being at MUFC, and remains determined to succeed at the club.
The Netherlands international obviously isn’t satisfied with his playing time, but as Romano explains, his situation could improve next season with the expected return of Champions League and perhaps with longer domestic cup runs.
Therefore, the player is expected to hold talks with Carrick, if the latter is confirmed as head coach, and if he receives guarantees regarding his role for next season, he could close the door on a summer exit.
Should Man United keep Zirkzee for another campaign
In his two campaigns at Old Trafford, the striker has only contributed with nine goals and four assists in 71 appearances.
But despite these meagre figures, Zirkzee managed to form a solid bond with the fanbase, who appreciate his skillset and dedication to the cause, which often surfaces when one of his teammates needs a morale boost.
The former Bologna star might never become a pillar at United or club legend, but he offers the manager a versatile profile capable of filling various roles up front, as well as an unorthodox playing style.
But the question remains whether or not Carrick, or whoever will be in charge next season, is willing to fulfil his considerably modest requests.
