Yankees analyst hints at Anthony Volpe's unexpected plan amid Jose Caballero's hot start originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees are having a strong season, which is typically the expectation for the organization. At the end of the 2025 season, shortstop Anthony Volpe underwent surgery following a hand injury. General manager Brian Cashmanpreviously indicated he would remain the team’s shortstop once healthy.
“I believe in the player still. I think we believe in the player," Cashman said. "It doesn't mean we don't play with, on any level, all aspects of roster assessments. He's 24 years old. I don't think the New York stage is too big for him. It's just still finding his way."
However, his replacement to begin the season, Jose Caballero, has gotten off to a strong start. Volpe is nearing the end of his rehab assignment, but there is now a possibility he may not be immediately called back up.
“By Monday, the Yankees will have to decide whether to bring Volpe back to the majors — and if so, in what role — or whether to formally option him to the minor leagues, a step never taken in Volpe’s three major league seasons, even through lengthy struggles. During the majority of those seasons, though, the Yankees did not have Caballero or any legitimate alternative option at shortstop,” New York Post’s Mark W. Sanchez wrote.
The Yankees have a significant decision to make, and YES Network’s Jack Curry suggested that Volpe may ultimately remain in the minors for the time being.
“The indications that I’m getting from talking to people around the Yankees… is that the Yankees are not going to move forward & promote Volpe to the Major Leagues. Not just yet,” Curry said.
For Volpe, the situation has to be frustrating, as Caballero’s strong play has complicated his path back to the majors. However, it still feels like only a matter of time before he gets another opportunity in New York.
Cashman was previously clear that Volpe would resume his role as the Yankees’ shortstop once healthy, but circumstances have shifted. Plans change quickly in baseball, and for now, Volpe appears likely to remain on the sidelines until further notice.
