Paul McGinley has compared Cameron Young with Scottie Scheffler after the world number three produced a stunning performance to win the Cadillac Championship this past week.
Young absolutely dominated the PGA Tour’s latest signature event. The 28-year-old took the lead from the early stages and never looked back.
Young finished six shots clear of Scheffler at Doral. It was every bit as impressive a statement as his victory at The Players Championship back in March.
Cameron Young compared with Scottie Scheffler after his Cadillac Championship victory
The American is now a three-time winner on the PGA Tour having taken some time to secure that first victory.
It is easy to forget now that Young did not appear to be in the conversation for a Ryder Cup pick at this time last year. He went on to clinch the Wyndham Championship at a canter and produced a superb display at Bethpage Black.
And speaking on Sky Sports after his win on the Blue Monster, Paul McGinley suggested that Young appears to be emulating the best player on the planet with his form over the last 12 months.
“He has always been a world class player. He had seven second place finishes before he went on to win. It’s a similar trajectory and career path to what Scottie Scheffler had before he went on to win. He had a lot of second place finishes before he broke through but once they broke through that glass ceiling of winning on tour then they seem to go to a different level,” he said.
“That is what he has done. That win at the Wyndham last year, the monkey off his back, and now we are seeing a completely different player and competitor. Scottie Scheffler did something similar.
“Also what he has done, a bit like Scheffler as well, is that he was a super player tee to green but his putting wasn’t great. He has fixed that now. He was 160th or so in putting and now this week he was second in putting and I think he is 13th this year.
“It is a very similar trajectory to what Scottie was on and he’s very stoic like him, so he’s a very similar type of player.”
What Cameron Young can do that resembles Scheffler and Rory McIlroy
There is an argument that Young is the best player in the world right now. Scheffler finished second once again at Doral. And yet, he barely managed to lay a glove on his Ryder Cup teammate.
It is the second time Young has won by a large margin. Meanwhile, his other victory came by the barest of margins at TPC Sawgrass.
And speaking on CBS Sports, Trevor Immelman claimed that Young has a level of ability that puts him in a very exclusive club in the current game.
“I think it’s seriously impressive this win. If you consider as well the fact that he was staring down Scottie Scheffler three of the four rounds, paired with him this week. And Scottie got a real dose. Normally, Scottie’s doing that to everybody else, but he got a dose of just how good Cam Young is this week. And it was seriously impressive,” he said.
“Now, he’s won three times on tour in a very short space of time, two of those were six shot wins. I spoke about it earlier this week, just talking about in the high regard with which I hold Cameron Young’s skillset and his talent level. He’s way behind the likes of Scottie and Rory when it comes to wins, but when you just look at raw talent and ability to overpower golf courses and pick everything apart and really get these big wins, I put him on a level with those two.
“And it’s going to be so interesting to see how the remainder of this year pans out, and then going into the future. I heard part of your conversation, now starting to talk about major championships, that is absolutely on the cards for him going forward.”
As Immelman notes, the next step for Young is to win in the majors. Seven top 10s in 19 appearances in the four biggest events of the year is extremely impressive.
He has also finished in the top three at three of the majors.
For some, that hurdle would look quite daunting. Ultimately, the majors define the legacy of the very best.
However, Young seems to barely change his demeanour regardless of how big the tournament is. With that, it would be no surprise if a major win was just around the corner.
