Rookie first-round pick Caleb Lomu spoke about what it was like to be drafted by the New England Patriots in an appearance on Patriots All Access.
The team made a point to trade up from the No. 31 overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft for the 28th pick with the division rival Buffalo Bills. It was a clear effort to continue to build the offensive line and improve the protection for third-year quarterback Drake Maye.
For Lomu, it's an incredible opportunity not only to be drafted in the first round by an NFL team but also to go to a team with as much history as New England.
“It’s the Patriots. They’re such an amazing organization," said Lomu. "…That really sunk in for me. I got the call, was celebrating, and that night I was really just lying in bed and was like, ‘Dang, it’s the Patriots.’”
Lomu could have a major impact right out of the gate.
He is expected to compete for snaps behind right tackle Morgan Moses, but he could earn reps on the left side, too, if Will Campbell struggles. There is also the potential for him to step in at guard if the Patriots need another body.
His presence and versatility as a player will give the team more flexibility when figuring out their best five offensive line combination for the 2026 season.
