LAWRENCE — KU is playing like one of the best teams across college baseball right now, and considering that continues to rise in the top 25 of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

The Jayhawks, ranked No. 11 this past week, are now in the top 10 at No. 9. That’s a two-spot improvement for Kansas (37-11, 20-4 in Big 12), which has now won 10-straight games. This most recent week of play saw Kansas beat Wichita State in a midweek game on the road and then sweep Big 12 Conference-foe Arizona at home over the weekend in a three-game series.

KU also remains in first place in the Big 12 standings, with the likelihood of a regular season championship growing as the regular season nears its end. After a midweek game Tuesday on the road against Creighton, the Jayhawks have a three-game weekend series at home against No. 15 West Virginia. West Virginia is tied with No. 17 Arizona State for second place in the Big 12 standings, four games back of KU.

If Kansas can continue to ride its momentum to a Big 12 regular season title, it could also end up hosting a NCAA regional in Lawrence come postseason play. The early years of coach Dan Fitzgerald’s rebuild have impressed nation-wide, but this would be the most prominent accomplishment for him yet. Fitzgerald took over ahead of the 2023 season, and took the team to the NCAA tournament last season for the first time since 2014.
