A SWISS flight that was operated by an Airbus A330 from Delhi to Zurich had to abort takeoff on Saturday night, prompting an emergency evacuation of the aircraft during which several people were injured.
The injuries range from some bruises and fractures to two passengers ending up breaking their legs while trying to exit the aircraft, while plenty of passengers carried their luggage and filmed cellphone video clips.
A sudden engine fire prompted the pilots to abort their takeoff to avoid more serious trouble if the chance were missed.
The quick decision made by the cockpit crew most likely prevented a serious accident so their actions are definitely to be commended in this case.
Here is a video with clips as published by Indian Express on Youtube:
There are many things that bother me in the scenes depicted in this video. The evacuation process was extremely chaotic, with people carrying luggage and even filming inside the aircraft.
There is no way this evacuation was completed in 90 seconds. If you watch and listen to what is going on there, it’s an absolute nightmare to imagine you’re in this group of passengers and crew.
I wonder how many of the infamous Indian wheelchair-bound passengers had a “Jesus moment” and suddenly jumped out of their seats.
During the evacuation, six passengers sustained injuries, including two with broken legs. This is rather common and one of the reasons why flight crews don’t like to order an evacuation over slides unless absolutely necessary. There are almost always injuries during this procedure.
In this particular case, it took 10 minutes to order the evacuation, and there was an actual mobile bridge attached to the plane, according to reports and images. Only the captain knows why this decision was mde and I’m sure we’ll hear more about it soon.
Conclusion
SWISS suffered an engine failure during a departure from Delhi Airport this weekend and the Captain aborted the takeoff which ended in an emergency evacuation of the cabin.
Several passengers were injured in this process, which is often the case when untrained people are forced to disembark via slides. The scenes depicted in the available videos are extremely disturbing as people are carrying their luggage and even stopping to take pictures and videos.
I’m curious what the final accident report will say about all this!
