The unique football journey of a former Carolina Panthers quarterback has come to an end.
P.J. Walker, who played three of his four NFL seasons with the Panthers, has retired. The 31-year-old passer made his decision known to his current team, the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders—who announced the news on Thursday afternoon.
An Elizabeth, N.J. native and Temple University product, Walker broke into the pros as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts in 2017. He’d move on to the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks in 2020, where he’d lead the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns.
His first NFL regular-season appearance came as a member of the Panthers later that year, as he replaced an injured Teddy Bridgewater in the second half in a Week 8 contest against the Atlanta Falcons. Over his three campaigns in Carolina, Walker made seven starts over 15 outings—completing 131 of his 228 throws for 1,461 yards, five touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Walker’s most memorable NFL moment came in the Panthers’ Week 8 matchup with the Falcons in 2022. With his team down 34-28 with 12 seconds left in the game, Walker found wideout DJ Moore on a 62-yard touchdown heave to tie the game—one Carolina would later lose in overtime.
He’d go on to pick up stops with the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks before joining the CFL in 2024.
