We’re still roughly a week away from the Phillies having fired Rob Thomson because of the team’s inability to play well. Taking stock of what things look like now is still a wee early since it’s only been six games, but those six games have been against some of the poorer faring teams in the National League in the Giants and the Marlins. The Giants are plagued by a roster filled with holes and a manager that probably shouldn’t be a manager at this level of baseball. The Marlins are still the Marlins.

Prior to Thomson’s being fired, the Phillies played the Cubs and Braves twice, once at home and once on the road, two of the better (and at the time, hotter) teams in the game. The Phillies have holes on their own roster and those holes were exposed to a large degree. After finishing with the Marlins today, the Phillies then have a schedule that isn’t exactly teeming with the titans of the game. Because of being able to play these kinds of teams, they have started to play better.

Which leads us to our question of the day: does the softer schedule play a part in the Phillies’ better play, or are they actually playing up to their potential right now?
