Coveted Tokyo-style pizza is making its way into New York City this spring when Pizza Studio Tamaki open a permanent location in the East Village at 123 St. Marks Place, at Avenue A, on Tuesday, May 5, with reservations available on Seven Rooms now.
Chef Tsubasa Tamaki had teased the Manhattan location with a two-day pop-up in February, fully taking over the former Moody Tongue Pizza address. His signature Tokyo-style Neapolitan pizza is built with a 30-hour fermented dough made with a specific Japanese and American flour blend that’s baked in a custom-built wood-burning oven seasoned with Japanese cedar shavings.
Pizza Studio Tamaki’s New York menu includes the Tamaki pie ($29), made with cherry tomatoes, fresh smoked mozzarella, and basil; the Bismarck ($36), with mozzarella, mushrooms, pork sausage, pecorino Romano, and an egg. Sides include charred broccolini with sauteed garlic, Parmesan risotto arancini, and meatballs. The 2,000 square-foot space holds 65 seats.
Tamaki opened his original restaurant in 2017. He expanded with locations in Tokyo and one near Okinawa City, followed by franchise locations in Bangkok and Singapore, with further plans around the world.
Technically, the Chicago-based Moody Tongue group is operating this Pizza Studio Tamaki location. The group had opened the address as Moody Tongue Pizza in late 2024, also serving a Tokyo-style pizza menu. This is also why the NYC Pizza Studio Tamaki is serving Moody Tongue Brewing Company beers (Japanese citrus lagers), plus wines and cocktails like spritzes and highballs.
While Pizza Studio Tamaki is accepting reservations, it’ll have room for walk-ins. The hours will be from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and then from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
