Cleveland Clinic is looking to expand a program designed to share its clinical and operational expertise with hospitals and health systems globally without taking ownership or control of those organizations.

Here are eight things to know about the program:

• Cleveland Clinic Connected is a membership-based initiative that offers long-term, consultative relationships aimed at helping hospitals improve quality, patient experience and clinical and operational performance.

• Launched in 2018, the program is part of Cleveland Clinic’s broader strategy to expand its global presence and extend its care model beyond its own facilities by building a network of independent, like-minded healthcare organizations focused on quality improvement. It currently includes six international members and three in the U.S., with plans for additional growth.

• The program is available to domestic and international hospitals and health systems and draws on Cleveland Clinic’s experience operating facilities across North America, Europe and the Middle East.

• Rather than managing hospitals or employing physicians, Cleveland Clinic Connected provides consultative support through services such as advisory services, clinical service line assessments, educational and training programs and strategic guidance, according to a May 1 news release. Member organizations retain full authority over governance, operations and patient care.

• Memberships are structured as engagements of at least five years, allowing time to build relationships and implement improvements.

• Cleveland Clinic evaluates potential members based on factors including alignment with its mission and values, geopolitical stability, economic conditions and whether the organization can provide meaningful benefit to the prospective member.

• The program uses a hybrid model combining virtual collaboration with in-person engagement. Cleveland Clinic teams travel to member sites, while member physicians and administrators visit Cleveland Clinic locations for observerships and training.

• Participating organizations receive support across areas including clinical and hospital operations, patient care, leadership development, supply chain, facility design, safety, quality and patient experience. A central focus is helping organizations adapt these principles to their local environments.

As the initiative expands, Cleveland Clinic plans to pursue measured growth, with potential expansion in regions such as Europe, Latin America and Asia.
